Hanuman Chalisa

Hanuman, the celebrated monkey devotee of Ram in the epic story The Ramayana, is one of the most popular Hindu deities. There are arguably more temples and small roadside shrines to Hanuman then all of the other Hindu deities combined. You see them everywhere, almost on every street corner, in both north and south India, like this one:

 

When I got interested in yoga and meditation in my teens, I had no interest in the Hindu deities, especially not a 'Monkey God.' I found the idea repulsive; an embarrassing and "sinful" aspect of becoming a yogi, like worshipping Aaron's 'Golden Calf' of the Old Testament. It took several years to finally become liberated from my narrow minded Judeo-Christian misconceptions, which said that Hinduism is a polytheistic religion for heathens! Now I don't mind being considered a heathen as long as I can worship Hanuman. Since understanding that all the Hindu deities are merely different forms of the one God, I say, "Go Hanuman!Bajrang Bali Ki Jai!"

Why Worship? 

Worshipping is what we already do, all the time, we just don't realize it. Our minds naturally worship something. To worship simply means to focus our attention with devotion, and most of the time we're devoted to fulfilling our material desires. Martin Luther said, "Whatever your heart clings to and confides in, that is really your God." We worship money, fancy cars, luxurious homes, cool gadgets, offering huge sacrifices to attain these, while regularly prostrating at the modern temple: the Shopping Mall. 

Whatever we aspire to and put our attention on grows, and how we worship today has sprouted our materialistic society. We have things, but not peace, since they get lost, broken, or tie us down to hefty loans, etc. The only lasting peace comes from directing our monkey minds toward God: the ultimate worship.

However, it's awfully hard for the mind to conceive of God at all. God is described as avachaniya in Hindi, unspeakable. It's much easier to focus on a form of God, or deity. Mata Amritanandamayi says, “Name and form are ladders to reach the formless Divine."Focusing our minds on a tangible form of God leads us to the intangible infinite.

Why Worship Hanuman? 

By worshipping a deity we increase that deity's divine qualities within us. Hanuman represents a range of qualities that are extremely helpful, especially when we're going through difficult times - devotion, faith, courage, strength, and power. These are the qualities that are most lacking when we're emotionally discouraged and depressed. Therefore, worshipping Hanuman during difficulties (or anytime) is time well invested and provides instant relief. 

 

Hanuman as Sankat Mochan: Dispeller of Distress

A common epithet for Hanuman is Sankat Mochan, or dispeller of distress. Hanuman represents absolute faith and devotion to God as Ram. Sita and Ram always live in his heart, which he proves when he rips it open. It's a universal principle that when we're devoted to an ideal greater than ourselves we're relieved of our stress and petty concerns. Mahatma Gandhi said, "The best way to find your self is to lose yourself in the service of others."Hanuman is always ready to serve Ram, a higher ideal, and by worshipping him we acquire this divine quality. Simultaneously our distress is removed. Hanuman is called Kripa Nidhan, the abode of grace, due to this quality of removing distress. 

Hanuman as Bajrang Bali: Strength Like Lightning

Another common epithet for Hanuman is Bajrang Bali, or body with strength like lightning. He gives the strength and courage to overcome difficulties quickly, just like lightning strikes quickly and powerfully. He's also called the Son of the Wind, and gets the job done swiftly, like the wind. There's no whimpering or vulnerability in Hanuman, as he meets every challenge with the power of the name of God on his lips. He's often depicted as kneeling on one knee, ready to spring into action to serve Ram, like an Eveready Battery fully charged. 

The Ramayana is full of Hanuman's acts of bravery and superhuman power making him the ultimate superhero. He has the faith to move mountains, which he does when he carries a whole mountainside filled with the sacred herb, Sanjivani, to heal Ram's brother, Lakshman. He can also make himself large at will, which he does to burn down Lanka and defeat Ravana's demon warriors. Likewise, he can make himself small, which he did to enter Ravana's palace undetected and find Sita. Therefore, Hanuman represents the ability to conjure up whatever qualities are necessary in the moment: to rise to the occasion to face our challenges, or make ourselves small and humble. His attitude is,"Whatever it takes, I'll do it 100%," as he fulfills Ram's work and brings goodness into the world. This is the attitude we need to become successful at any endeavor.

 

Hanuman as Bhakti: Devotion

Hanuman's power is a result of his devotion or bhakti. Stories in the Ramayana imply that devotion to God is even more powerful than God himself. For example, Hanuman's devotion enabled him to fly across the ocean to reach Lanka and rescue Sita, whereas Ram had to build a bridge to get across. 

Hanuman's the ideal devotee, singularly focused on serving God in the form of Ram. The best job description is to be a devotee, and what better role model than Hanuman. He silences our fickle, monkey minds by directing them toward God in pure devotion. His heart is like a light switch permanently stuck in the 'on' position. The purpose of his incarnation was to embody devotion, and it makes sense that he chose the form of a monkey to do so in unrestricted fashion, unbounded by human laws. He's considered an incarnation of Shiva, while Ram is considered an incarnation of Vishnu, so the love between Hanuman and Ram is really the dance of devotion between Shiva and Vishnu. 

 

Ultimately, devotion is the reason we incarnate as well, because when we have devotion in our lives we realize our connection to God. In the Ramayana, Hanuman's devotion made it possible for Sita to be reunited with Ram. The Ramayana is an allegory representing the soul's evolution, with each character representing an aspect of our own nature. For instance, Ram represents God, Sita represents the individual soul as soon as she became separated from Ram, and Hanuman represents devotion. When our individual soul (Sita) is kidnapped by the demon Ravana (Ego), we need the help of devotion to an ideal (Hanuman) to reunite us with the Divine (Ram). Hanuman is often worshipped alongside other deities, and his image is usually found in any Hindu temple. Sometimes he's depicted nearly formless: just a rock painted red-orange (sindoor), maybe with a discernible image of him, maybe not. This is a strange concept for most Westerners. The idea is that remembrance of Hanuman in any way, even in a simple image on a rock, awakens devotion. 

 

Worship without devotion is just a rote mechanical practice. But once the heart is enlivened, then worship becomes that much better, regardless of which form of God you're worshipping: Krishna, Lakshmi, Shiva, Ganesh, Buddha, Christ, Muhammad, etc. For this reason, worshipping Hanuman can be considered a supportive practice that helps one become a better devotee of one's chosen form of God, or religion. Ultimately, Hanuman takes us beyond devotion to a form, towards devotion to serving Ram in all forms and seeing God's omnipresence everywhere (sarva vyapak). 

Hanuman in Astrology: The Subduer of Saturn and Mars

Hanuman is worshipped primarily on Tuesdays, Mars's day, in north India, and on Saturdays, Saturn's day, in south India. So Hanuman is associated with both Mars and Saturn. He represents Mars's qualities, but is primarily a remedy for Saturn. 

Hanuman represents Mars because he's a warrior, like Mars, and represents power, strength, courage, energy, etc. which are all qualities of Mars. Hanuman is also associated with the color red or red-orange and the gem red coral, just like Mars. Hanuman balances the negative aspects of Mars like self-centered desire and ambition, impulsivity, domination, control, etc. by directing his entire energy towards service to a higher ideal, Ram. Hanuman's actions are life affirming because they're devoted to goodness, which Ram represents. This counters the destructive, aggressive force of Mars. Just like fire can be either destructive or purifying, Hanuman directs the fiery quality of Mars toward positive outcomes. For instance, in the Ramayana he burned down Ravana's stronghold of Lanka, which represents the purification of our ego-centered thoughts. Therefore, Hanuman is a remedy for Mars's afflictions in the natal chart. 

However, Hanuman is primarily considered a remedy for Saturn's afflictions in the natal chart, not Mars. Hanuman is the perfect antidote for Saturn because his qualities balance such a long list of Saturn's negative qualities, as shown in the following table:

Hanuman represents the positive qualities of Mars, like strength, courage, and energy, which are antidotes for the weakness, fear, and laziness that an afflicted Saturn represents. Hanuman also represents a major shift in attitude from Saturn's sense of limitation to unlimited possibilities, from selfishness to selflessness, from closed hearted bitterness to open hearted devotion, from seeing responsibilities as a burden rather than as joyous service. Therefore, to call upon Hanuman facilitates a transformation of a whole slew of negative, misery inducing qualities of Saturn.

Hanuman is considered the only Hindu deity not affected by Saturn. Even Brahma, Vishnu, and Shiva are said to have succumbed to the negative influences of Saturn, but not Hanuman. Therefore, Hanuman is often worshipped as a remedial measure to mitigate the malefic effects of Saturn.

There are several stories demonstrating Saturn's deference to Hanuman. In the Ramayana, the demon king Ravana captured Saturn in an attempt to avoid bad luck, and bound him in chains. After Ravana was defeated in battle, Ram asked Hanuman and the other monkey warriors to take care of the woman, children, and wounded. It was during a search that he found Saturn trapped in a dungeon and rescued him. As a show of gratitude, Saturn blessed him, promising that those who prayed to Hanuman would have Saturn's negative effects reduced. 

Another story, indicating the same result, is that Saturn once climbed on Hanuman's shoulders and began to impose his oppressive influence. Hanuman then immediately grew in size to the point where Saturn was sandwiched between Hanuman's shoulders and the ceiling. Writhing in pain, Saturn begged Hanuman to release him, and promised that those who prayed to Hanuman would have his negative effects mitigated. 

 

Hanuman Sadhana (Spiritual Practices) 

In the Hindu tradition, there is always a short japa mantra that can be repeated to invoke the qualities of any deity. Hanuman's japa mantra is:

 

If one doesn't have the time or interest to do a longer practice then chanting a japa mantra works very well. It can be easily memorized and repeated anytime, anywhere. Usually it's repeated108 times, using a japa mala (beaded necklace), but any number will be beneficial. 

The Hanuman Chalisa

The primary practice for worshipping Hanuman is reciting the Hanuman Chalisa, the Forty Verses in Praise of Sri Hanuman. It takes 5-10 minutes to recite depending on the melody and tempo. If it's chanted with concentration and sincerity then it's tremendously beneficial, and time well spent. 

Itt's well worth it to memorize the Hanuman Chalisa, because then you can recite it anytime, anywhere: while you drive, wash dishes, fold laundry, etc. Memorization is the ancient Iphone App of the yogis, giving you an ultimate portable playlist. In 1992, I spent the whole summer memorizing the Chalisa, because I wanted to chant it during my first trip to India later that year. Once I got there, I tried to find rickshaw drivers that had Hanuman's picture somewhere in the cab, and would sing the Chalisa while we drove. I'll never forget how one driver in New Delhi was spilling over with enthusiasm as we sang it together all day. "Come on, just once more?!!" he'd ask laughing hysterically.

One drawback to the Chalisa is that chanting 40 verses is a long practice for most people, and obviously much more complicated than reciting Hanuman's short japa mantra. 

Another drawback, especially for Westerners, is that the Chalisa is usually sung in Hindi. This means that most Westerners don't have a clue what they're saying. If they haven't learned the meaning, then it can seem like reciting gibberish for 5-10 minutes. This usually doesn't get people excited enough to make it a regular practice, let alone commit it to memory.

BE STILL/ SUMMA IRU

Summa Iru! - An often quoted Tamil phrase. It means 'be still'. It applies more to the mind that to the body. It is the greatest spiritual teaching. These two small words encompass so much. Be still and reach inside to your atma, to your soul. Do not allow the mind to wander here and there.

 

Let happiness and sorrow come and go - be still.

 

Be balanced and self-controlled. Find out how to always remain happy. Make the mind one-pointed. Do not worry about anything because the Divine is looking after you. Man can always do some kind of work with the body but do not think too much about it. Be still.

 

You will always be successful if the mind is free and calm. Always think that God or guru is with you and you will have a peaceful mind. Turn the mind inwards to the depths of the soul where all is still. This will give you peace.

 

Drop all thoughts and realise your Self - then all disturbing mind-activity will cease. You will know the Infinite. Remain without likes and dislikes and be still.

 

The true Self is always still but not so the mind. Summa Iru, being still, is the secret and mystery of all spiritual practice - yet it is so simple. Why do you still want to experience the illusory world? If you simply stay still, bliss will overcome you.

 

When you are totally and truly still, no outside sounds can disturb you. You are busy trying to understand spirituality and know something. Realise that there is ultimately nothing to learn and nothing to know. You simply have to be totally still.

 

God is with you all the time but you do not realise it. Be adaptable and do not agitate your mind. See and understand that the world and everything around you is always changing. We do no do anything. All is activated by God and everything happens according to His will.

 

Be still and you will understand all this.

 

Be still - don't think. Don't think of anything at all. Let thoughts come and go like passing clouds. Just watch them and be their silent witness.

 

Be still and meditate. Being still is real meditation.

ASHTAVAKRA

The story of Ashtavakra is taken from the great ancient Indian epic, the Mahabharata. It is the story of a deformed young boy whose intelligence surpassed many old sages of his time.Sage Uddalaka ran a school (Ashram) teaching Vedic knowledge. 

Kahoda was one of his best disciples. Uddalaka was so pleased with him that he got his daughter Sujata married to him. Sujata, eventually got pregnant and wanted her child to surpass all the sages of his time. 

So, she began to sit in the classes taught by Uddalaka and Kahoda, listening to their chanting with the unborn baby. It was one day, in a class taught by Kahoda, the unborn baby spoke up from inside the womb, “This is not the way to chant the verse, father.” Kahoda felt insulted in front of the class and cursed, “You will be born deformed.”

Sujata did not take the instance too seriously and was ambitious. She wanted more money to raise her child the best. So she asked her husband to go to king Janak who was then preparing for a fire worship ceremony (Yagna) hoping that the ceremony will bring money to the family.

When Kahoda approached Janak, the king received him respectfully but said with regret “Kahoda, I am unable to perform the Yagna which I decided to perform several years back. Sage, Bandhi arrived from no where and asked me to start the Yagna only after he is defeated in an academic discussion with the sages participating in the Yagna. His condition further includes that the sages who come forth for the debate, if defeated, will be drowned. So far he has killed many learned sages. Now it is up to you to take the challenge.” Kahoda agreed to debate with Bandhi. He was defeated and drowned in the nearby river. 

The widowed Sujata heard the news and repented her actions. A few months later she gave birth to a boy who was deformed at eight joints and so named Ashtavakra. He got his education from his grandfather Uddalaka. Ashtavakra was extremely intelligent and his grandfather loved him dearly and was very proud of him. When Ashtavakra was only twelve, he finished all that he needed to know from his grandfather. He also heard the fate of his father and the Yagna of king Janak which still remained unfinished as no one could defeat Bandhi.

One night Ashtavakra ran away from the hermitage and came to king Janak. Looking to his deformed body, the guards were amused. Ashtavakra retorted, “Do not judge a person by his appearance and age, judge him by what he knows. Inform your king that there is a person ready to challenge Bandhi.” The king came and was surprised to see a small deformed boy. He asked a few questions and was greatly impressed by his knowledge. King Janak soon arranged for the debate 

with Bandhi. 

When the spectators laughed on seeing the deformed Ashtavakra, Ashtavakra said with anger, “I did not know that the so called learned gathering is no better than a bunch of cobblers who judge a person by the skin and not by the knowledge he has.”

To everyone’s surprise Ashtavakara defeated Bandhi in no time. With vengeance he then requested the king to drown his father’s killer. Bandhi then disclosed his identity. He said, “I am the son of Varuna, the god of water. I came to earth on the request of my father to get the best sages from here to perform his twelve years of Yagna. The only way I could get them to my father was to challenge them in a debate and throw them into water. Now that my father has completed the Yagna, let us go to the river band and watch the sages walk out of the river.”

People rushed to the river bank and watched the sages return from the river. Kahoda came and embraced his learned son Ashtavakra. He then openly admitted that his son Ashtavakra was a lot more intelligent than he. Bandhi then asked Ashtavakra to take a dip in the river, with the blessings of his father, Varuna, which would make him normal. Ashtavakra did as he was told and came out of the river as a handsome young man. Janak rewarded Ashtavakra and Kahoda. They went back to their hermitage to be united with the family. Uddalaka, was so happy to see his worthy grandson surpassing in knowledge to all the great sages of his time. Sujata rejoiced at seeing her handsome 

son and the husband.

Astral Journey and the Astral Body



You first separate yourself from the body; then you identify yourself with the mind, and then you function on the mental plane, with this fine body just as you do on this physical plane. Through concentration, you rise above the body-consciousness; through meditation, you rise above mind; and finally through Samadhi, you realize your spiritual nature. These are three important exercises of Antaranga sadhana in the achievements of Kaivalya, the final beatitude.



You can, by mere willing alone, travel to any place you like with the astral body and there materialize by drawing the necessary elements either from Ahankara or the universal storehouse, the ocean of Tanmatras. The process is very, very simple to occultists and Yogis who know the rationale, the detailed technique of the various operations. Thought reading and thought-transference too can be quite easily performed by those who can function with the astral body. Concentrated mental rays can penetrate opaque walls, just as X-rays pass through the opaque body. This is one of the Siddhis (mystical perfections). Siddhis are not the goal of life. Do not entangle yourself in these Siddhis which mar your further spiritual progress. Shun them entirely. Continue your Sadhana and stop not till you reach the goal.



Movement of the Mind



After a short practice of meditation you will feel that the body gets lighter in a short time, say fifteen or thirty minutes after you have taken your seat on Padma, Siddha or Sukha Asana according to your taste and temperament. You may be semiconscious of the body and surroundings or you may become quite unconscious of the body. There is a great deal of happiness owing to concentration. This is happiness resulting from concentration which is quite distinct from sensual pleasure. You must be able to differentiate these two pleasures through the intellect, rendered subtle by constant meditation. Dharana (concentration) and Dhyana (meditation) have a power to sharpen the intellect. A trained intellect can comprehend subtle, philosophical and abstruse problems beautifully well.



A disciplined intellect that can carefully differentiate the happiness derived from concentration and that of sensual objects will naturally run daily to enjoy this kind of new happiness derived from concentration. Such a mind will loathe at sensual pleasures. There will be extreme detesting abhorrence and positive aversion to objects. It is but natural. Because this kind of happiness is more lasting, sustained, self-contained and real as it emanates from the Atma (spirit soul). You can distinctly feel that the mind is moving, that it is leaving its seat in the heart, and that it is trying to go to its Yatha Sthana (original seat). You know that it has left its old groove and is now passing on a new avenue. As a result of meditation, new channels are formed in the brain, new thought-currents are generated, new brain cells are formed. There is a transformed psychology altogether. You have got a new brain, a new heart, new feelings, new sentiments, new emotions and new sensations.



Anahata Sounds: The Mystical Internal Sounds Heard During Meditation



Anahata sounds are the mystic sounds heard by the Yogi at the beginning stage of his meditation. This subject is termed Nada-Anusadhana, an enquiry into the mystic sounds. This is a sign of purification of the Nadis due to the practice of Pranayama. The sounds can also be heard after the uttering of the Ajapa Gayatri mantra, "Hamsah Soham', one hundred thousand times. The sounds are heard through the right ear with or without closing the ears.The sounds are distinct when heard through closed ears. The ears can be closed by introducing the thumbs in the ear through the process of Yoni-Mudra. Sit in Padma or Siddha Asana. Close the ears with right and left thumb and hear the sounds very attentively. Occasionally you can hear the sounds through the left ear also. Practice to hear through the right ear only. Why you hear through the right ear only or hear distinctly through the right ear is because of the influence of the solar Nadi, Pingla. The anahata sound is also called omkara Dhvani. It is due to the vibration of prana in the heart.

Vedic Astrology.

 (In Sanskrit, Jyotiṣa comes from “jyótis”, meaning - "light, heavenly body.” It is also spelled Jyotish, and Jyotisha in English.) It is the Ancient Indian system of Astronomy and Astrology (also known as Indian Astrology, or Hindu Astrology). The best among all these is, Vedic Astrology. Even though it has many parts, two are the most important.The first is called Samhita or Mundane Astrology. It involves predicting important events based on the analysis of the astrological dynamics in a country's horoscope, or general transit events, such as war, earth quakes, political events, financial positions, electional astrology, house and construction related matters (Vāstu Shāstra), animals, portents, and omens, etc

The second one is called Hora.It is considered Predictive Astrology, and is based on the analysis of time, at the moment a query is made. The foundation of Jyotisha is the notion of Bandhu, of the Vedas or Scriptures, which is the connection between the microcosm and the macrocosm. The practice of Jyotisha primarily relies on the Sidereal Zodiac, which is different from the Tropical Zodiac used in Western Astrology, in that an Ayanamsa adjustment is made for the gradual precession of the Vernal Equinox. Jyotisha includes several nuanced sub-systems of interpretation and prediction, with elements not found in Hellenistic Astrology, such as its system of Lunar Mansions (Nakshatras).
Astrology remains an important facet in the lives of all human beings. However, due to its exploitation by a few people, Astrology has become a different subject. Today, it is practised and believed, mostly by Hindus, and those persons from western countries, who still have great faith in astrology. In Hindu Culture, newborns are traditionally named based on their Jyotish charts, and Jyotish concepts are pervasive in the organization of the calendar and holidays, as well as in many areas of life, such as in making decisions made about marriage, opening a new business, or moving into a new home. To some extent, Astrology even manages to retain a position among the Sciences in modern world. Now I wish to tell you about the Bhavas or the effects of the different houses.

 Bhāva – the houses.

A house is a zodiacal division according to local time and location (i.e. an effectively "moving" division of the sky from the perspective of a fixed observer, rather than a fixed portion according to the stars, as is true of the signs.) Houses are enumerated counter-clockwise from the house on the eastern horizon, passing through the "other side of the sky" and the western horizon, until  returning to the starting point.

More than one system, which aligns houses with signs, is recognized in Jyotisha. One is what Western astrologers call the Whole Sign House System, another is Sripathi, which is akin to a Porphyry House System. But Atharva Vedic Astrology, is the most accurate.The significance of the 12 houses are as follows:

1. Lagna - Nature of Nativity, Appearance, Health, Character, and Purpose of Life.
2. Dhana - Wealth, Family, Domestic Comforts, Early Education, and Inheritance.
3. Parākrama - Younger Brothers and Sisters, Communication (Talking, Writing, Business Documents), Intelligence, Later Education, and Short Journeys.
4. Suhṛda - Mother, Emotions, Education, Home, Property & Land, and Surroundings in Old Age.
5. Suta - Children, Love, Recreation, Devotion, Speculation, Gambling, and Creativity.
6. Ripu/Roga - Health, Maternal Aunt & Uncle, Litigation, Servants, Mental Worries, Enemies, and Foreigners.
7. Kāma - Spouse, Business Partners,Trade, Agreements, Honor & Reputation and Death.
8. Mrityu -Longevity, Failure, Suffering, Sexuality, Occult, Dowry, Inheritance, Imprisonment, and Torture.
9. Bhāgya - Luck, Higher Learning, Philosophy & Religion, Mentor or Guru, Father, Prosperity, and Travel.
10. Karma - Profession, Status, Power, Father, Mother-in-law, Government and Business.
11. Āya - Friends, Hopes, Earnings, Club or Social Activities, Elder Brothers and Sisters, Daughters & Sons-in-law.
12. Vyaya - Expenses, Sleep, Spirituality, Travel & Pilgrimage, Secret Enemies, Imprisonment, Hospitals, Asylums, and Liberation.

One's ascendant, or Lagna, the Rasi which is rising on the eastern horizon at the time of one's birth, is the most influential and important one. Another important impact is of the Janma Rasi, the rasi in which the moon lay, while one was born. In addition, The sage Parasara, mentioned a few special ascendants, before mentioning the results of various divisional charts and houses. His mention that houses can be counted from special Lagnas, clearly indicates that he wanted special Lagnas to be used for certain specific purposes. Some important special Lagnas are as follows.

• Udaya Lagna (ascendant counted from the natal time, which is the most important)
• Chandra Lagna (ascendant counted from natal moon sign - very important Lagna)
• Surya Lagna (ascendant counted from natal sun sign)
• Karak Lagna (significator taken as ascendant for all Grahas)
• Varnada Lagna (for social company)
• Shri Lagna (for prosperity and marriage)
• Indu Lagna (for wealth)
• Hora Lagna (for financial prosperity)
• Gati Lagna (for name and fame)

No prediction is complete without analyzing the following things. First, the Drishti, the vision or aspect of a planet, plays a major role.The second is Argala or the intervention. The third is Arudha, or the mounted image.The fourth is Yoga, or the planetary combinations.The fifth is Shadbala, or the sixfold strength of the planets. Without analyzing these five factors, the prediction of the horoscope is incomplete. Now let me explain a little about all these aforesaid five factors.

Drishti - the aspect.

Aspect is one of the most important phenomena. It not only interlinks the planets with each other, but also plays a role as a bridge between the signs. In Jyotisha, the word Drishti is tantamount to Aspect, which means glance or sight. It is the transfer of influences to another Graha (House) or to another Rāshi (Planet), as a result of their situation, in relation to one another.

The hierarchy of aspect can be categorized into two types as;

Aspect based on the Planet or Sign’s Nature, and aspect based on Relative Distance.

I-a. Aspect based on Planet or Sign’s Nature.
This is the system of aspect studied in Jyotisha. This holds that certain planets or signs sight another planet or sign, depending on its nature^. This can also be divided into two kinds –namely: Graha Drishti  and Rasi Drishti.
The Graha Drishti should be preferred first when analyzing the Nakshatra Dasha Chart, with respect to the Moon.
The Rāshi Drishti should be preferred when analyzing the Rasi Dasha Chart, with respect to Special Lagnas and Vargas, i.e. Divisional Charts.
I-b. Aspect based on Relative Distance.
This is the same method currently in vogue in Western Astrology. Tajik Varshaphala ( the Vedic Solar Return Chart), applies this technique to erect 14 different types of aspects, also known as Varshaphala Yogas.

II. Argala – the intervention.

The Karakas (Significators) of various houses are interlinked. The support provided by one house to another, is called Argala, and the obstruction offered to the houses, is called Virodha Argala. Grahas (planets) in 2nd, 4^th, and 11th houses, cause Argalas on a given house, whereas the planets in 12th, 10^th, and 3^rd, cause Virodha Argalas to the 2nd, 4th and 11^th, respectively.
Benefics generally give Shubha Argalas, and Malefics offer Papa Argalas. If however, a Malefic has an Argala on a house of which it is a Significator, such an Aragala can be termed as Shubha. For example Malefics in 10th house cast Papa Prgala on the 9th house, as 10th house is second from 9th. This may make the newborn, non-religious and indicate bad relations with bosses and teachers (provided there is no Virodh Argala from 8^th).

III. Arudha – the mounted image.                 

The term Arudha Pada, is also known as just "Pada". Arudha, literally means "mount,” and refers to the IMAGE of one sign falling on another, due to the "reflection of the rays emanating from it and being reflected by its lord”. Keeping the reflection in view, the Karaka (Significator) can be taken to be the Moon. Count from a sign to its lord. Then count as many signs from the lord to arrive at the ARUDHA PADA. For example, if the Lagna Lord is in the fifth house, then count five signs from the Lagna lord to arrive at the ninth house. This ninth house becomes the Arudha Pada for the Lagna.

Exception: The Arudha Pada cannot be in the same sign, or the seventh, from it. In case this happens, then choose the tenth house there from. For example, if the Lagna Lord is in the 4th house, then the Arudha Lagna should be in the 4th from the 4th house, i.e. the 7th house. But since this is not allowed, the tenth from it, should be chosen. The tenth from the 7th house, is the 4th house, and the 4th house becomes the Arudha Lagna.
The Arudha of 1st house is also called the PADA LAGNA or the ARUDHA LAGNA. Arudha Lagna stands for "manifestation of self, in this Maya (illusory world). In this manner Arudha Pada can be computed for all the houses. They are called Dhana Pada (2nd), Bhratripada (3rd), Matri Pada (4th), Mantrapada (5th), Satrupada (6th), Dara Pada (7th), Roga Pada (8th), Bhagyapada (9th), Rajyapada (10th), Labhapada (11th) and Upapada (12th). The most ancient Atharva Vedic monk Jaimini, discussed Arudha lagna and Upapada extensively in his classical treatise.

IV. Yoga – the planetary combinations.

In Jyotish, Yoga means "yoka" or combination. Yogas are certain planetary combinations. Jyotish classics indicate hundreds of thousands of Yogas. The Chandra (lunar combinations - for general luck), The Dhana (wealth related), and Raja (power and success related), Yogas, are often studied. Nearly eight hundred and seventy six (876), astrological yogas have been mentioned in ancient Atharva Vedic texts.

Shadbala – the sixfold strength.

Shadbala means sixfold strength. Although these strengths are used in combination for finding the effect of planets on the lives of the natives, there is more use of the strengths and we get a clue of those uses from their names. These strengths need not be used only in predicting the results of the Dasa, however, they can also be used for normal interpretation of Horoscopes.


Shad Bal consists of the following strengths:

1. Sthan Bal (Positional Strength) 2. Dig Bal (Directional Strength)  3. Kāl Bal (Temporal Strength), inclusive of Ayan Bal (Equinoctial strength) 4. Chesht Bal (Motional strength)         5. Naisargika Bal (Natural Strength)  6. Drik Bal (Aspectual Strength).

These strengths are computed for the seven Grahas from Sun to Saturn. The lunar nodes (Raaghu and Kethu) are not considered.

No one can become an astrologer by reading the texts and books alone. The blessings of the Yaksha Devathas is a must. Only then, will the words from the mouth of an astrologer, be true.
